Roultte Wheel Selection in Genetic Algorithm

Roulette Wheel was one of most common method among selection methods in GA. It start after generate population of chromosome work has been completed. The problem is how to select individual population in crossovering method. Before selecting each, every individual population need to calculate their fitness and rank it by good solution in higher and lower for less good solution. Then it can represent by a big round cake or circle. The big partition cake for good solution and small partition cake for less good solution. The idea was every good solution will have more probability compare with less good solution. This picture below are taken from others website. Population no. 2 have small shape because of less good solution compare with no. 2 and no.3 where it was more good solution chromosome.

After that throw the dice to get random number, then two selection from population cromosome for crossover process. It also can be use to select which population that can be use for mutation process. Finally we can select the best solution among every population, crossover and mutation process. These idea for fast searching solution compare with conventional method. Thank you for reading.

Encoding Problem into Genetic Algorithm process

When dealing with Genetic Algorithm optimization method, there is need to encode problem that can be suite in Genetic Algorithm process.
In last article I have mention some about few ways to encode problem. Now I just want to explain more about one of the method that what I be use which is Permutation Encoding.
Permutation encoding can be used in ordering problems, such as traveling salesman problem or task ordering problem. In permutation encoding, every chromosome is a string of numbers, which represents number in a sequence.
In my research I use permutation where it can give order chosen node to be sleep mode, than monitor the delay on network as it fitness. Time slot of node to be sleep mode will be change for each chromosome population if packet delay of network increase. The process will be repeated until one solution have been found.

Crossover

Single point crossover - one crossover point is selected, till this point the permutation is copied from the first parent, then the second parent is scanned and if the number is not yet in the offspring it is added

Order changing - two numbers are selected and exchanged

Process involve in Genetic Algorithm

Hai, today I would like to tell more detail about process that need to be understand when dealing with Genetic Algorithm. Before that, there is need to encoding the problem to be represent by individual cromosome, so that can be process in Genetic Algorithm. There are four main type that can be represent of problem situation. There are:

Binary Encoding
Permutation Encoding
Value Encoding
Tree Encoding

After complete identify which type encoding need to be choosen, then can go through futher prosess. There are four main processes there are:

Selection
Crossover
Mutation
Regeneration

1. Selection

Under this process also have 3 methods where:

Elitism
Roulette Wheel
Tournament Selection

2. Crossover

Under this process also have many methods but 2 of them are:

Exponential Scaling
Linear Normalize

3. Mutation

Under this process just similar between all researchers that using GA

4. Regeneration

Under this process it will select the best population for next iteration, so if there are new child cromosome that better with their parent cromosome from previous generation then it will replace or overwrite that parent cromosome.

Today I understand how Genetic Algorithm work where it can give solution. It start with a problem where we need to identify how we can come out with solution. I have some guideline where to start with:

Encoding of the problem in binary string.
Random generating of a population. This one includes a genetic pool representing a group of possible solution.
Reckoning of a fitness value for each subject. It will directly depend on the distance of optimum.
Selection of the subjects that will mate according to their share in the population global fitness.
Genomes crossover and mutations.
And then start again from point 3.

For now I need to try some example that related with GA. My focus now is understanding the GA operation itself and to know how GA can help me using optimization method to find my solution. Example each node that I need to force to sleep mode will represent by a bit. Bit 1 represent a node in active mode and bit 0 will represent node that in sleeping mode. With this all bit representative can build one chromosome. With this chromosome it can start with GA operation that will come with new offspring. This new offspring can be test with a formula or simulation that can give result where it was good chromosome or bad chromosome.

First day in NTU

It was great to foot step myself in NTU. First thing need to do was preparing the slide presentation for brieft introduction my research to NTU supervisor and suddently he want to change the title for attachment project, so that it can suite with my research. It is good thing because I dont need to waste my time to study other algorithm that not related with my research. Straight away do my research here with under attachment supervisor monitoring. .AlhamduliLah today I was attending ICSECS09 conference that held at Swiss Garden & Spa, Kuantan, Pahang and it was my 4'th conferences that I have attended. As student sponsor by NSF, I was allowed to do attachment at any other University to get more experience and increase learning curve during studies. For master student we are allow only at Malaysia and Singapore Univ. only while for PhD student unlimited to any Univ. in the world. I do some finding on University at Singapore. There are NUS and NTU. So I choose NTU because this university more focus on technology area compare with NUS.

One lecture ware interested to supervise me during attachment program, he was Asst Prof Low Yoke Hean Malcolm. His area of specialization on optimization of traveling salesman problem, job shop scheduling and resource scheduling. Hope fully everything run smoothly ...

This week the ICOCI 09 conference was held at The Legend Hotel KL and it was my 3'rd conference that I was attended. During my presentation one of the audience was so impressed with my project. How to fix DYMOUM trace file can be use with tracegraph

Last week one final year student see me asking about problem how to analyze DYMO trace file using tracegraph, then I try to investigate what is the problem. When open DYMO trace file using tracegraph, it shown some error that about some sort "ip bla.. bla.. thing". That make me to do a comparison between other routing protocol trace file with DYMO trace file. Then I found that there is some new element that tracegraph cannot understand. So the easy way to solve it, just to delete that "not understand" data.

By using Notepad++ software open that trace file.
Then open find & replace menu.
Select regular expression search mode. See figure attach
Then at find what: type \[ pt . \]
For replace with: leave it empty
Replace all
Dont forget to save your file

Your trace file now can open using tracegraph

After attend talk by Prof. Abbas Jamalipour at UPM today then I got inspire from his speech. It was about new algorithm on swarm intelligent technique to solve network problem. One of the method is how Bee worker communicate with each other and how their distribute their job like queen bee, worker bee, soldier bee & etc. He also tell about another method which is ant algorithm & how the way they searching path or route to their food. So I will try to propose implement his idea to my new algorithm, perhaps it can solve some issue...

New algorithm give a lot off effect on dropped packet

After I satisfy for extended life time for battery of WSN router. It also need to look up on dropped packet using trace graph. Then I realize that when certain node is push to sleep mode if I cannot reroute properly than a lot of dropped packet will happen. He I show that quite a lot of dropped packet compare than other routing protocol.

New algorithm with more than 3000 sec.

I try new algorithm with more than 3000 sec. it was suggested by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norashidah. Then suddenly I saw that my algorithm is not good enough to save energy for long term utilization. Then I do some modification that to be fair for all intermediate nodes. So I come out with new method where every intermediate node will have same time of sleep. To calculate that we record when 1'st node come to sleep then until the last node start to sleep. So the same duration will apply to other intermediate nodes.
Some sort like this:

∑ sleep time = Time last node sleep - Time 1'st node sleep
Time node i wake up = Time node i sleep + ∑ sleep time

Then the result change where new method can save more energy compare with other routing protocol.

AWK file solution for JTrana

Last mid night while working with Zul, I just only thinking how to solve problem of wasting time waiting JTrana process. The problem is when we want to show energy graph it take about half to 1 day for analyzing trace file. Like example when I set simulation time until 3000 second then size the trace file increase up to 0.5 Gbyte produce long time to analyze. Then our greatest sifu Zul come to introduce how to use AWK file. Then after few basic step he teach me, I realize that with AWK script file can solve problem waiting from 1 day become few second. I so wonderful, how most great Allah introduce someone like him to me.

Header file (for global variable, function declaration, constant)
Application file (for main body)
Implementation file (for function definition)

Dropped packet for new routing strategy but still maintain same as existing RP

Again I look on dropped packet for new energy strategy give same amount dropped packet with DSDV routing algorithm. So here I can conclude that our new strategy is still not bad. This is 1'st our objective achievement where we concentrating improvement on energy. The result:

After I try new energy routing strategy on my simulation environment that can give advantage on remaining energy. But then when I look at packet delay show that new strategy effected. It is because after one or two intermediate nodes in sleep mode where data from source node have to go through long way until reach access point. Here the result:

We can see 3 out of 5 nodes the new algorithm is better which is node1, node 2 and node 7 but two more nodes effected cause of new energy routing strategy. So now I need to fine another way that can improve in this problem...

After I start testing our energy strategy on simulation environment. We can see from 1'st result that show some improvement on energy saving on remaining energy. Then after compare with original simulation without energy strategy, our claim that it can prolong energy life time of battery.

Further more there is need to check whether this energy strategy can ensure network performance always in good condition...

Flow chart new method

Today I want to introduce new method in energy saving strategy. It was focus on intermediate node, where each node rotating shift sleep mode due to prolong remaining energy. Here I show where we got 2 level of energy threshold value where 70% and 35% of remaining energy. Any intermediate node will change to sleep mode when 70% of remaining energy or level 1 threshold value accord. But if all intermediates node exceed level 1 threshold value, the threshold value itself will change to level 2 threshold value where until 35% of remaining energy. Then the same process apply to intermediate node.

Set node to idle/sleep state

To further our routing algorithm, there is need to do some saving energy where the specific node can be force to sleep or idle modes. Our focus is in intermediate node where the node will always exhaust energy because of forwarding data from source node to destination node. But working with NS-2 with physical layer mac 802.11 there is no basic command that can set node to be sleep/idle. The node itself can sleep/idle when there no activity sending or receive data on node. So there is need to figure out some alternative way to make the node force to sleep.

It was 2'nd conference I had. The environment very common where nothing so exited. The audience to small. All of them was presenter it's self. I never get any question from audience during my presentation, but it very nice when we can gather with all researcher in Malaysia with difference background i.e. medicine, ICT, engineering, physic & chemical etc.

Programmer-defined Library

Now I want to concentrate on how to create our own algorithm, some detail need to clearify i.e. what thing need to implement for our algorithm. Working in NS-2 there are limitation thing we can do in TcL language. But for our case we need to edit in C++ method where new library to be introduce.

We create our own programmer-define libraries to further modularize our program. Some brief about programmer-defined library. In library contain some general purpose function that we aspect to use in future application. Then after we clarify them pun in one library and implement them, we can use in other projects, just we use in standard library functions in many other programs.

Then they spoke to me that I success to get NSF scholarship.
Wow it was the best news in 2008 that I have.

Specific - A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six "W" questions:
*Who: Who is involved?
*What: What do I want to accomplish?
*Where: Identify a location.
*When: Establish a time frame.
*Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
*Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
EXAMPLE: A general goal would be, "Get in shape." But a specific goal would say, "Join a health club and workout 3 days a week."

Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal.
To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as......
How much?
How many?
How will I know when it is accomplished?

Attainable - When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals.
You can attain most any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps. Goals that may have seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them. When you list your goals you build your self-image. You see yourself as worthy of these goals, and develop the traits and personality that allow you to possess them.

Realistic - To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. A goal can be both high and realistic; you are the only one who can decide just how high your goal should be. But be sure that every goal represents substantial progress. A high goal is frequently easier to reach than a low one because a low goal exerts low motivational force. Some of the hardest jobs you ever accomplished actually seem easy simply because they were a labor of love.
Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished. Additional ways to know if your goal is realistic is to determine if you have accomplished anything similar in the past or ask yourself what conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal.

Timely - A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of urgency. If you want to lose 10 lbs, when do you want to lose it by? "Someday" won't work.
But if you anchor it within a time frame, "by May 1st", then you've set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on the goal.
T can also stand for Tangible - A goal is tangible when you can experience it with one of the senses, that is, taste, touch, smell, sight or hearing. When your goal is tangible you have a better chance of making it specific and measurable and thus attainable.

Power cosumption using Jtrana

WSN is one routing protocol algorithm that depend on battery as power supply. Every strategy of routing protocol need to plan in order to save battery power as much as possible. This is because of by focus on energy consumption we can ensure the live spend of battery will be prolong. However to save battery energy it got limitation where average delay and throughput for the network must in acceptable range. But for let we see what existing routing algorithm can give in order to save power consumption.

We are now compare between three routing algorithm, we are only focus on access point because from our observation show access point will always use large of energy consumption. So we make it more than other common nodes.

2.	Transmission range	175 meters
3.	No. of node	9 nodes (8 common nodes & 1 sink node)
4.	Routing Protocol	Protoname (New protocol)

Tips due preparation for conference technical paper

have done a progress presentation last week. During presentation Mr. Fairuz where he is coordinator of RA seminar suggested when every simulation and result achieve during our research work, after that we need to put on one A4 paper then give some explanation on it. Then if we want to publish on several conference, we can just choose which result need to include for respective conference, so that we can publish 2 or 3 conference in the same time, I think is good to us to apply the tips on our research management. I try to understand relationship of these protoname routing protoname as well other routing protocol. But before that I try to look for other routing protocol where like example DSDV and AODV. What are trying to see is every similar type of file in each folder. Also to see what another file that it "include" during beginning of program. There are:

Introduction Protoname routing algorithm

I want give some brief explanation about main important point in protoname routing algorithm there was 5 file we need to build up where there are:

protoname.cc
protoname.h
protoname_rtable.cc
protoname_rtable.h
protoname_pkt.h

All these files got their own function...

Then it also need to configure other file to declare all new file that we added before like example:

packet.h
cmu-trace.h
cmu-trace.cc
ns-packet.tcl
ns-default.tcl
ns-lib.tcl
priqueue.cc
Makefile

After that we just can execute make and the new routing protocol should work in our NS-2 simulation..

Presenting technical paper at NCTT-MPC 2008

I publish one paper on VoIP research field with title VoIP over MYREN in National Conference on Telecommunication Technologies and Malaysia Conference on Photonics 2008 (NCTT-MCP 2008) at IOI Palm Resort, Putrajaya where it is near to JW Marriot Hotel. Try Protoname routing protocol

After some review on paper as what I mention before, showing how to add some new routing protocol. There involve some editing on existing NS-2 library like e.g make.o, packet.h & etc. But after I successes install new routing protocol call protoname the test result from some simple simulation show all packet drop from network but it manage work with no error on the program. So now I need to compare this routing protocol with current routing protocol available NS-2 library.

Now it is time for me to concentrate on deep routing protocol algorithm. Then the question is: where to start? Because to edit on routing protocol it is was big issue & real hard work to be done. For the beginning what I want to try is review some tips based on paper “Implementing a New Unicast routing Protocol in NS2” from University of Murcia, Spain, then hopefully by try these step can be give some idea where area is need to concentrate....

Instal Xandros on SATA based PC

Mr. Farizul found DVD that contain latest Xandros version 4.5, that can work and support on SATA based PC. I try to install with new PC and finally I successful installed. Thank to Mr. Farizul doing searching on it. The performance for new Xandros, in new PC is very good. With Pentium Core 2 Duo come along with 4G Byte RAM can give NS-2 simulation very fast. The next problem is the trace file produced by simulation take longer time to analyze, especially trace from mannasim script generator. Sometime trace file take around 1 or 2 days to complete. I want to try on server if it can analyze more fast than PC.

Problem install linux at new computer

Farizul and me are trying install Linux at new computer, Ubuntu, Xandros & Kubuntu. Most problem we are facing was new computer come with SATA cable, that Linux cannot recognize so need to find way to install them...

DSDV routing protocol with 25 nos. of nodes

Another testing conduct with DSDV routing protocol and increased the number of nodes. From the result show some difference behaviour happen. The simulation environment is:

1.	Scenery size	400 meters X 400 meters
2.	Transmission range	200 meters
3.	No. of node	25 nodes (24 common nodes & 1 sink node)
4.	Routing Protocol	DSDV

Result from the scenario show with DSDV always generate data to all nodes. But the total of amount packet generate not consistent and most nodes not much contribute to generate packet.

From figure above only 3 nodes manage generate more than 4000 packet. Now we try to see whether the three nodes most generate packet have relationship with forwarding packet.

From the result show not much packet manage to receive at access point, this what we want to figure about?

A lot of dropped packet, more than 8000 packet so, this what we want to avoid of.

DSDV routing protocol on 10 nos. of nodes

Now I try the same situation before but a bit of modification on type of routing protocol and size of area. DSDV routing protocol; it is not big reason for me to change the area size but just only to see the difference between of them. There are:

1.	Scenery size	400 meters X 400 meters
2.	Transmission range	200 meters
3.	No. of node	9 nodes (8 common nodes & 1 sink node)
4.	Routing Protocol	DSDV

On this time from the simulation, we can see not all of the nodes generated the packet.

From figure above node no. 3 & 4 not activate to generate packet.

Also not many of intermediate nodes involve forwarding packet.

But quite much of packet generated can arrive to the access point.

Still we can see most of the packet dropped on network.

Next I will change try on environment with more no. of nodes (it is up to 25 no. of nodes) and but again with DSDV routing protocol.

Run NS-2 TcL script and evaluate with trace analyzer

I try difference combination of simulation script with TcL generator on scenery size, transmission range and no. of node. Before this I was try some simulation show the power consumption not much used within 100 second simulation, where about 5 joules. So I try to set the initial energy at 5 joules where we can see power usage until the battery empty.

The simulation environment was set on:

1.	Scenery size	350 meters X 350 meters
2.	Transmission range	175 meters
3.	No. of node	9 nodes (8 common nodes & 1 sink node)
4.	Routing Protocol	DSDV

The result was we can see all nodes generate and sent from common node

some forwarding packet in intermediate nodes and

only only a few of the packets can receive at access point

where others drop on the network.

In future work are I will simulate the scenario with the same no. of nodes but difference type of routing protocol.

Jtrana trace analyzer

Now still doing on the evaluation on mannasim script, where it can generate TcL script file and after that just run on it and produce trace file. But when we are evaluating on the trace file, it come out with a lot of drop from the node.

Currently I have change to Jtrana. Jtrana is better than previous trace analyzer where it can show the power consumption on the node.

New partner & friends

First, it long time since I not login and post anything, this is because of I was forgotten my user name and password to login this blog, sorry for every one.

My new partner was Fairuz Najwa, she was good and clever girl, her FYP (Final Year Project) was in WSN area, so it is good to have someone expert in the team.

Mannasim & Trace Graph

Mannasim is add-ons to NS-2 for wsn, we used it's GUI to generate tcl script but suddenly only AODV, DSDV, DYMO & Leach manage give the output & other than that still having problem, hopefully it can be solve later.

And another tool we use is trace graph, from tcl script we can generate trace file, from trace file we can analyze traffic to see behavior of the routing protocol. Only AODV & DSDV can give good graph. DYMO and Leach give some error like "cannot read the IP file" & "maximum variable size allowed by the program is exceeded...", I want to try by reducing the node like 2 or 3 nodes and see how the result is...?

I work with my group doing research about finding new routing algorithm for wireless sensor network, the research it self only cover on simulation, meaning not involve with hardware, another person will doing all on hardware and not involve me.

We are fund by MOSTI under EscienceFund. For simulation we will using NS-2 and also add-ons with mannasin. For now we using trace graph as traffic analyzer. So far only routing protocol AODV and DSDV manage to give good output and the rest still dealing with problem.. I still working on it hopefully can solve shortly....
